fine. But the time sequence was all over the ...

I didn't even want to finish this book, which is rare for me. The story was chopped up in such small pieces I simply could not follow it. Not only was the time sequence too choppy, so were experiences of the characters. Each chapter was told by a different character. OK. fine. But the time sequence was all over the place in each chapter. Same thing for the characters. A bit here, a bit there. Impossible to identify with anyone or care what happened to anybody.

The Best Irish Novel Of Recent Years

I read this wonderfully written novel in two days - I could barely put it down. It is a sad and poignant story of life in post-Celtic Tiger, recessionary rural Ireland and anyone familiar with it will recognize the people through whose thoughts the novel is narrated. Some of the references may puzzle non-Irish readers and the writing is done in the way the characters speak e.g. "Bobby was always fair sound to me. He's the only one who never slagged me." And there is plenty of grammatically incorrect talk such as "I seen, I done" etc.,but that is necessary for authenticity and the author has captured the individuals' voices perfectly. As sad as the story is, it is also very compassionate in that we get to hear the innermost thoughts of the characters some of whom are regarded as outcasts and weirdos by the locals but who are, in their isolation, possessed of the same essential humanity as the rest of us and who like us all are seeking some kind of redemption.

Page-turner/meditation on human neuroses and misunderstanding

Excellent prose, if you can get used to the consistent use of rural Irish vernacular. I was able to get used to that pretty quickly (as a non-Irish person) and it was a page-turner right from the start. Each chapter is the inner monologue of a different person in this small, working class Irish town. There is lots of darkness and humor-because it is Irish! Most of the characters are either likable or not-likable but fascinating. This was my first Donal Ryan. I will read more of his stuff.

Reliable Resource

This book was a good read and is a fairly reliable resource for air sampling and industrial hygiene. The sections on air sampling were valuable but I also found a lot of valuable information at the Sensidyne website who manufactures Gilian air sampling pumps (http://www.Sensidyne.com). Also the NIOSH website and Sensidyne website both have sampling methods listed which are helpful for setting up your sampling train.

Mediocre

I'm working on a project about Curie, so I've read several biographies about her thus far. This book isn't absolutely terrible, but I think it handles Curie poorly. It underexplains much about her life and motivations, gives little due to the science behind her work, and goes out of its way to make her "inner world" excessively dramatic. Curie's story is amazing and fascinating, but this book sacrifices explanatory detail and historical context in favor of an emotionally simplified (and thus more boring) version of the person. Even the title is misleading -- Curie was dedicated to her work and slightly reclusive, but she was hardly an obsessive personality.

I encourage you to please check out the longer but much more engrossing biography by Susan Quinn (titled Marie Curie: A Life (Radcliffe Biography Series)), which provides the historical and scientific context necesssary to make Curie's story really come alive.

A Fascinating Biography

Obsessive Genius is an utterly fascinating portrait of a hallowed and difficult subject. If you are a fan of Goldsmith's work, (I am) you will immediately see that she is the perfect person to give Curie the complexity and dimension she deserves --as a scientist and as a woman. It's a short book which is by turns moving, informative, and intriguingly unexpected. I couldn't put it down.

Captivating

I learned of this book in the magazine section of my Sunday newspaper. I strongly doubted that a nonfiction book would be able to hold my interest for long as they can be so dry and tedious, but the topic sounded interesting, the review was promising and as I am a huge historical fiction reader I thought it might be worth a try. I am so grateful that I ran across that recommendation or I would have missed out on a real gem!

The story grabbed me in right from page one. I couldn't wait to find some free time to be able to get back to reading! While definitely written as nonfiction, the story at times reads like a simple novel with short dialogue, letter excerpts and diary entries. These personal touches add a wonderful element to the book. The scientific explanations were presented very simplistically and were easy enough to understand. They too, added a wonderful and important element to the story.

Marie Curie's life was fascinating: a woman of rare intelligence and genius, she was also plagued by severe depression (especially after the loss of her beloved Pierre) and faced the constant struggle to prove herself and receive her much deserved credit in what was a very male-dominated field. Yet despite these struggles, her devotion to science and her world-changing discoveries never diminished; they enveloped her very soul. I must admit that at times, when reading about her accomplishments and the ease at which science came to her, I felt alittle inadequate and less than intelligent. She was an inspiration!

I was very happy to discover the wonderful coincidence that while I was reading this book, the anniversary of Marie Curie's discovery of radium and radioactivity took place. I strongly recommend this book to anyone that has an interest in science, history, women's rights, medicine or just plain life!

This book tends to be a bit on the academic side but it is written very well and covers many books that I'd not been aware of. So glad that I bought this. Up here in the northwest suburbs of Chicago we don't have many books on the South but luckily Amazon carries a wealth of obscure titles....long may you reign, Amazon!

Great for novices. Only the basics covered.

It's fair to say what is covered in this book is fairly basic, and can be found on the net for free.
However, all that info on the net, and the way the information is presented within this book, this has been the first to not make me fall asleep while trying to grasp the basics of technical analysis. It's the style in which this book was written, and the revision excercises at the end of sections, is what gives it a 4/5 rating.

For those looking for advanced concepts, and for those who have > 1 year of trading experience, I'd steer clear as this is definitely a book for beginners.

Excellent overview of trading for the market novice.

The best way to describe 'Trading Secrets' is to say that it's basically a beginner-level version of Van Tharp's 'Trade Your Way To Financial Freedom'.

Auatralian trader Louise Bedford is a technical analyst, but 'Trading Secrets' is not what you would call a "technical analysis book". Her other books such as 'Charting Secrets' and 'The Secrets of Candlestick Charting' delve into far more depth and detail about the specifics of technical analysis and charting. 'Trading Secrets', like Van Tharp's masterpiece, focuses more on human factors such as trading psychology, as well as trading methodology and the basics of system design. It's the first book that sharemarket novices should read, both to understand the market as well as understanding themselves.

'Trading Secrets' is divided up into six sections (although Part VI is basically just a summary of the key points).

Parts I and II focus on understanding your own personality. Do you have the discipline to follow your trading plan? How will you cope with a string of losses? Will you give in to negative emotions such as anger or greed or fear? Bedford explores both the positives and negatives of human psychology, with the aim of helping you develop the coolness and emotional detachment necessary for success as a trader.

This part not that self-contained, and serves mainly as a broad introduction to topics covered in more detail in 'Charting Secrets'.

Part IV delves into more detail into system design as well as broader issues of money management. The essential principle of "cut your losses short and let your profits run" is explored in depth through concepts such as capital protection, stop losses, position sizing, and pyramiding your capital into successful trades.

Part V discusses more advanced topics such as short selling, options, and CFDs...which are probably not for the true novice. Again, this is a broad overview only, with much more discussion in Bedford's other book 'The Secrets of Writing Options'.

The first two parts are particularly important for novices. Having all the charts and indicators in the world means nothing if you are an angry, undisciplined, impulsive trader. Controlling your own emotions is a critical element for traders of all experience....even as someone who has traded for a while, I still find myself coming back to these parts of the book.

Throughout it all, Bedford's highly engaging writing style is ever-present. Bedford has the ability to explain difficult concepts in simple laymans' terms, without sounding patronising or if she's talking down to you. Her personal background, as well as her trading methodologies, are drawn on throughout the book, giving the book quite a warm human feel. You always get the sense that Bedford genuinely wants you to become a good trader, as is keen to provide you with as much "learn from my success and mistakes" knowledge as possible.

In all, a combination of detail and engaging style makes this an excellent beginner-level book. Use this as your introduction to the broad principles of trading, as I did, before moving on to Bedford's more specific technical analysis books.

Gabriele Lanaro is a PhD student in Chemistry at the University of British Columbia, in the field of Molecular Simulation. He writes high performance Python code to analyze chemical systems in large-scale simulations. He is the creator of Chemlab—a high performance visualization software in Python—and emacs-for-python—a collection of emacs extensions that facilitate working with Python code in the emacs text editor. This book builds on his experience in writing scientific Python code for his research and personal projects.

A good, short, and cheap introduction to speeding up Python code

This book is fantastic for what it's for, and hopefully I can describe it well enough so that no one is surprised that I rated this 5 stars. FYI, I bought the kindle version and had no problems.

This book is extremely short. I was able to read it while flying over just a couple of states, but I've been using Python, Numpy, and Cython for a while now. I got this book to try and pick up on anything I didn't know. I found some things I wasn't familiar with (e.g. ipython parallel, multiprocessing, numexpr, and some profiling tools) and thought this book explained them well.

Essentially, there are a few simple examples that the author uses to show how to exploit some numerical and parallel processing libraries to get massive speedups in your Python code. These speedups are quite impressive, but that's mostly because Python is rather inefficient at most things in favor of flexibility. The key here is to shoehorn Python code into C code, whether that's through a library full of someone else's C code, or your own C extensions. The book shows that this process can actually be really, really simple in terms of code. In my opinion I think understanding how or why you should attempt certain optimizations is the hard part. I'm not sure a book can give you that as it's something you sort of pick up with practice, but this book gives you a good introduction to the tools for getting you there.

At this price point, if you are struggling with slow Python code and want to learn how to speed it up, buying the Kindle version at $10 will be worth your money. But do have a look at the Cython documentation as well, it is also pretty good. There are a couple of papers entitled "Fast numerical computations with Cython" by Seljebotn, and "Cython tutorial" by Behnel, Bradshaw, and Seljebotn that also serve as useful extensions to the documentation and this book for doing Cython work. See also the recent Cython book by Kurt Smith, which goes over similar topics but is a little longer (N.B., I haven't read through that one in its entirety).

This is what you need to know....

All languages have an optimal way that they can be written to get the most performance out of them. Once you understand those techniques, you are on your way to creating more and more efficient solutions. This book is great for the novice to intermediate python developer and serves as a guide to writing better solutions.

A story that melts your heart!

Amazing! I can't believe this lady!!! She's full of inspiration. I never read something like that before. She chooses a very delicate subject to write about and creates a masterpiece. Typical:)
I honestly don't know how Diana Nixon does it. I read many of her books and each of them has something unique and she really knows how to create beautiful characters. She just have "the gift", you can't be bored, you can't say..oh, I read about this thing already, what more can she made of this? Oh, no, that's not her. She has that talent to keep you curious and drooling:)
OK, so this story here is about orphans. Like I said, this is a delicate subject to talk about.The author presents us the world inside of one special orphanage. At first, I didn't know what to expect. The story stars with Louise, the main character. She is seating on the street begging people to give her some money.She describe us the way the children live there, how they have to "work" to have some food. It is awful. I can't even imagine how you must feel to be alone in the world, to grow up knowing you are not loved, that you're birth was not a happy event for you're parents, that you have no friends, no one to trust, not a moment to feel safe. Reading about Louise's life made me very sad and when in the scene appears an angel I made hopes for her just like she did. It's amazing how people find hope in the smallest things.
You probably wonders what angel am I talking about..well that you have to discover yourselves because I don't have enough words to describe him, I just can't say enough to make you understand..you have to read this wonderful book. You have to feel it,to enter the story and see yourselves how his actions makes you want an angel like him. I always dreamed to have my guardian angel. Reading this I felt every single thing Louise felt, the hope, the treason, the dream for a better life.
Anyway.. no more talking..just read this and you will understand. Every word written here will make love Louise and William and most of all..the lovely author.
I really love your mind Diana! I hope that will want me to read more of your books because I can't stop, it's unbelievable how you know to reach my heart:)

The ending left me both satisfied and breathless...

Louise by Diana Nixon

Louise is a woman who is both kind and strong; locked away in a world of little freedom. As a child she grew up in an orphanage under the role of an evil woman. A place where your best friend could be your enemy. Where your very survival depended on the amount of money you collect off of the streets. It was survival of the fittest. How can this young girl survive in a world such as this? But after an encounter with a kind man with beautiful eyes she makes a promise that she intends to keep. No one will harm her.

As she turns eighteen freedom is at her fingertips. The last thing to do is to go to a cabaret club called, Le Papillon to see about a job to be a dancer, but it isn’t exactly what she had in mind and when she protests the owner, Drew, makes it very clear that he has bought her and she will work under him until her debt is paid off. The horror is when he proves that she signed the document herself keeping her suck there. A trick well played by the orphanage and him. Again she has no freedom, but the illusion of. At least she loved to dance.

The atmosphere of the story is beautiful. The scenes are elegant with layouts that make me want to visit these places. I want to be an exclusive member to this club. All the characters you come across, no matter how small you grow to love and hate. And quickly you find that everyone has a story that Louise can’t help but bring to the surface. She is a woman wise beyond her years in a world that she has only known as a cage.

But there is hope. As a mysterious masked man steps into her life. What woman wouldn't fall under his spell? And that begs an even better question, why did he want Louise? And is there more to Le Papillon then meets the eye?

Diana Nixon has written a powerful story filled to the brim with mystery, intrigue, and romance, with a character and a plot that both captivates and steals your heart. I don’t think I had a moment where I put the book down. I was just that drawn into it. And the ending left me both satisfied and breathless, like I had just experience my first kiss and then I was saying ‘goodbye’.

The only way you could ever upset me, Diana, is if you tell me there isn’t a book two. Haha But knowing you there will be one soon enough. And I look forward to reading it.

Louise, such a beautiful story. From beginning to end. From the beginning Louise has this innocence that I see in my daughter every single day- which I am sure all of us can say about our baby girls- She is young at heart but she has been dealt a really crappy hand at life.

Louise has a beautiful heart and spirit, she meets a wonderful stranger who opens her eyes and shows her the world. He is good for Louise because he helps her see the ways of the world that her beautiful innocence shelters her from. He teaches her how to be a woman.

Louise is a dancer, she is graceful and steady on her feet, and even though her stranger helps her grow up, she claims her independence and that makes her even more amazing. The stranger is sexy, and mysterious. Where can I find one? lol

Beautiful story. Diana's best yet. If you have read her stories for years like I have, don't even think about passing this one up. You will be missing out if you do. I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone it's beautiful.

Probably more 3.5 stars, but good read

This is a good book but you almost have to read his ex-wife's (Jeanne Trantel) version first to get more of a background. After reading her book I waited for his version to come out, though I didn't find it quite as interesting (just the facts....he robbed, he went to prison, this is how prison life was). It didn't give any real insight as to why he robbed the banks (other than the fact that he needed money), i.e., why didn't he feel he could go to his wife with what was really happening, why couldn't he find any job whatsoever, why couldn't Jeanne get a job to help out, etc. Basically, it kind of skimmed over his marriage which I would think had something to do with him feeling he had no alternative but to rob banks. Also, I found the writer's excuses (in the end of the book) for Stephen's behavior a bit off-putting. They were clearly living beyond their means (Stephen did elude to this ever so briefly by stating they bought a house over the top of their budget), even going so far as to give an example as to how hard it would be to go from making $60,000 (I think) to $12,000 annually. Whether or not he lost his job (which many people do and don't rob banks), living beyond their means is where the problem started. Aside from this, I found Stephen's remorse genuine and believe he did come out a better person. God bless him and I do wish him the best!

Great book! If the truth is what your after, read away! A candid tell all, that's well written and forth coming. For the first time I have told everyone the whole sad story of my life of desperation and what I did to help my Family.
