Fascinating

David Farer lived in a well known brothel in Amsterdam on and off over a period of several years. During some of that time he was assistant manager of the brothel. But his major interest was conducting interviews with the women who worked there. This book is the result. On page 24 he quotes the first woman he describes as saying, "You must make us look like people who happen to be prostitutes. That's what we are." Farer succeeded in fulfilling this request. That is what makes this book so interesting. His presentation of the women, their backgrounds, current lives, activities in the brothel and their attitude towards their work and their customers is both objective and empathetic. He also introduces us to a wide range of customers and their interactions with the prostitutes, a few of which are remarkably affectionate and reciprocal.

About the Author

John D. Anderson, Jr., was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, on October 1, 1937. He attended the University of Florida, graduating in 1959 with high honors and a Bachelor of Aeronautical Engineering Degree. From 1959 to 1962, he was a Lieutenant and Task Scientist at the Aerospace Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. From 1962 to 1966, he attended the Ohio State University under the National Science Foundation and NASA Fellowships, graduating with a PhD in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering. In 1966, he joined the U.S. Naval Ordnance Laboratory as Chief of the Hypersonics Group. In 1973, he became Chairman of the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Maryland, and since 1980 has been Professor of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Maryland. In 1982, he was designated a Distinguished Scholar/Teacher by the University. During 1986–1987, while on sabbatical from the University, Dr. Anderson occupied the Charles Lindbergh Chair at the National Air and Space Museum of the Smithsonian Institution. He continued with the Air and Space Museum one day each week as their Special Assistant for Aerodynamics, doing research and writing on the History of Aerodynamics. In addition to his position as Professor of Aerospace Engineering, in 1993, he was made a full faculty member of the Committee for the History and Philosophy of Science and in 1996 an affiliate member of the History Department at the University of Maryland. In 1996, he became the Glenn L. Martin Distinguished Professor for Education in Aerospace Engineering. In 1999, he retired from the University of Maryland and was appointed Professor Emeritus. He is currently the Curator for Aerodynamics at the National Air and Space Museum, Smithsonian Institution.

An absolutely brilliant textbook

Modern Compressible Flow by Anderson is simply one of the best textbooks I have read during my engineering studies. It was the assigned book for my course in compressible flow and I think the highest praise I am able to give is that the book is the reason that I am now fascinated by the subject as a whole and have taken every opportunity to continue with the subject.

I suspect that compressible flow could easily come across as very abstract and as merely an exercise in calculations, but Anderson manages to present the subject in a down to earth manner. He explains every concept such as total quantities (pressure, temperature etc.), shock waves, oblique shock waves, expansion waves and nozzle flow, in plain English and in a gradual manner while relating them to the real world with analogies. He does this each time before any new relations for a topic are developed. The historical note sections are one example of how the material is put in context with real world phenomenon and applications.

Anderson does not make any leaps when deriving the relations in the book, which I personally appreciate because I feel more comfortable with the final result when the steps involved are clear. Any calculation steps which are not explicitly written are easily performed on your own from the clear progression Anderson presents and even without them everything is extremely clear. The numerous examples further show how flow quantities are related and how the relations developed are used under a number of different scenarios. The examples also discuss interesting phenomenon but are never relied on to explain a concept. This is always done before the examples.

The book progresses from the basic concepts in the first 5 chapters to comprehensively cover many more advanced topics such as irrotational flow, linearized flow, conical flows, three dimensional flows, numerical methods for compressible flows and finally high temperature and hypersonic flows. Each of the later topics build on fundamentals developed earlier in the book and the reader is never left stranded when a new topic is introduced.

To summarize, if you have a course in compressible flow then this is the book to use, and if you do not then this an excellent introduction to a very interesting subject. Incidentally, if you are looking for an introduction to aerodynamics, then Anderson's book Fundamentals of Aerodynamics (Mcgraw Hill Series in Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering) is equally as excellent as Modern Compressible Flow.

a little disappointing

Well written classic supersonic theory, but "flavor" of numerical methods is given only : I think a college textbook of that price should give more than just flavor. Classic supersonic theory is not complete and needs to be integrated with other prior classic books (i.e. Ferri, Aerodynamics of supersonic flows). Overally, a little disappointing about the quantity of information given.

Delightful English ghost stories

What a pleasure to discover this "long lost" collection of classic English ghost stories! And many thanks to Ash Tree Press, for digitizing many of their limited editions for the Kindle.

Randalls Round collects nine stories by Eleanor Scott (a pen name of H.M. Leys) first published in the early 20 th century. The stories have a similar feel to those of M.R. James, and also reminded me of the weird tales of E.F. Benson. The tales are chilling, not gory, and many end at the crisis in the action -- sometimes ambiguously. I especially enjoyed these mysterious gaps and slight hints -- Scott leaves plenty of room for your own imagination and avoids the sometimes stultifying tone of some ghost stories. Her use of ancient folklore for the background in many of the stories is done with a light but devastatingly effective touch.

A good, solid collection of tales for the ghost story connoisseur.

A nice collection of stories you've probably never read, with some really excellent pieces like 'Randalls Round', 'The Twelve Apostles', and 'At Simnel Acres Farm' (though "The Room" seemed too much of it's period to be really frightening)...but her characters often seem clueless in the extreme. The American in "Twelve Apostles" (a story that owes a lot to "Count Magnus" and "The Treasure of Abbot Thomas") finds these giant slime-trails leading from the haunted room he's ordered unlocked, and he very casually assumes they belong to a possibly man-sized slug...and just ignores them. Then in the otherwise excellent "Celui-l�" Maddox sees this tall, gaunt...thing clawing at the ground, letting out a hideous cry "...like the howl of a dog." before running off at incredible speed while leaving no visible footprints...and again he just mutters "Of course it's impossible to tell in this light." before blundering into events that almost result in his death.

Still, it's a good collection...and most of the stories were worth the price. Give it a shot, won't you?

Brilliant and easy to follow recipes. I have a number of food intolerances in my family and I found these recipes seemed to suit all of us. Lee seems to be able to add colour and heaps of flavour to all her meals.

Severly lacking

Not worth the price tag. It does a fair job of listing the dialog boxes and explaining them, but so does the help. It also lists the command line switches, but again, so does the help. The so-called "Advanced Features" alluded to in the synopsis is 23 pages label "Beyond the basics" - the help has essentially the same material. One star is generous.

The nuts and bolts - truly exhaustive

Some authors would take advantage of the dearth of books on a particular topic, and simply "cash-in" by cranking out a one-of-a-kind title with anemic, poorly researched and incomplete content. Fortunately, Mr. Roche hasn't taken the easy way out, instead choosing to draw upon his own apparently extensive experience working on a daily basis with VSS, and delving into it's workings under-the-hood, exposing both how to make effective use of this invaluable tool, and traps that lurk for the unwary developer or project manager.
It's unfortunate that it has taken this long for a quality book on this subject to appear. Many thanks to Mr. Roche and his publisher for producing a reference that is my constant companion in configuring and using VSS in our shop.
I've known of many developers who have given up on using VSS in their shops, instead choosing to find other (often more costly and ineffective) methods of dealing with version control and trying to manage collaboration in multi-developer projects. This book could have allowed them to confidently deploy and implement a VSS installation.

Basic Sourcesafe

Whipple and Roche goe beyond the very limited Microsoft documentation. He actually explains real world applications and how SourceSafe works and doesn't work in a variety of situations. This is the manual that SourceSafe should have had. The addition of screenshots to give you a clear picture about what he is discussing is helpful. Why didn't MS do that? Because that would be user friendly. Don't get me wrong I love most of the stuff MS puts out, it's their documentation that stinks. Thank goodness for authors like Roche that put it in the proper perspective. If you are working with SourceSafe you will want this book. It may not give the tips that "Real World Software Configuration Management" does, but it has most of what you will need to administrate SourceSafe. I did expect a bit more for the price, but then books are just overpriced.

Loiane Groner lives in S�o Paulo, Brazil and has over 8 years of software development experience. While at university, she demonstrated great interest in IT. She worked as a teaching assistant for 2 and a half years specialising in teaching algorithms, data structures, and computing theory. She represented her university at the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest, Brazilian Finals (South America Regionals), and also worked as Student Delegate of SBC (Brazilian Computing Society) for 2 years. She won a merit award in her senior year for being one of the top three students with the best GPAs in the Computer Science department and also graduated with honors.

She has already worked at multinational companies, such as IBM. Her areas of expertise include Java SE, Java EE, and also Sencha technologies (Ext JS and Sencha Touch). Nowadays, she is working as Software Development Manager at a financial institution, where she manages overseas solutions. She also works as an independent Sencha consultant and coach.

Examples too Simple, Explanations too short...a missed opportunity.

Sencha Architect (SA) App Development is a very short book (about 93 pages of actual content). I am new to Ext JS but have been doing software development for over 10 years. So, I think I am aware of my own limitations vs limitations in the content of this book.

It covers the basic interface, creating a simple Sencha Ext app, simple sencha touch app, some tips/tricks and then publshing and packaging and other resources. Overall this is not a beginners book. But you could pick it up and follow it. Groner is trying to provide some insight on using Architect vs regurgitating online help descriptions, which I can appreciate. But I didn't feel like I was getting insight from an experienced Sencha developer on how to use SA in an intelligent way beyond simple, single web pages.

Groner attempts to briefly explain MVC (just 1 page), but I find it a clumsy definition and still left me bewildered. I do know what MVC is, but her definition is poorly presented. She has to mention MVC though because SA is an MVC oriented development approach. But explanations are short.. for everything. Quite often, I found myself asking "why do you have to do that ?".

So, this book lacks insight from an experienced developer about developing meaningful applications. The 2 examples she provides are overly simple and lack depth. I can understand you don't want to confuse the reader with complex examples but without meaningful examples, and taking the time to actually explain things, you can't appreciate the capabilities of SA and the development approach you need to take. The book is afterall called "App Development", not "Overly simple examples for clicking buttons"

The examples are for beginners, but it requires that you know a Ext JS to an intermediate level. Groner could have included more sophisticated examples to walk through but I think she was trying to appeal to a wide audience. But in doing so, this book misses the mark in terms providing insight into using SA. You would gain almost as much from the online videos than using this book. The screenshots are not very well set out, and at first are confusing. Frankly, she could have used more page space to improve the flow. There is clear numbering of the order of steps in the screen shots for doing the tasks. Groner points out where things go to accomplish the objective and there is not much else beyond briefly explaining it to support the MVC principles.

I was left with more questions about SA after reading it. The back cover is a bit misleading as the topics are covered, but not to an extent that you can get through a meaningful application.

So, should you get this book ? NO. There is a wealth of online information from Sencha, forums and blogs that you can glean to accomplish the same thing.

The examples on the book are too basic. I recommend Sencha Touch 2 and Learning Ext JS 4 before you read this book. You will get more out of this book that way, At least I did.
