Great book. If you liked the HBR article, you'll love this!

Frequently organizations face the challange of what not to do. They tend to believe in the person presenting the idea, rather then creating a rigorous process for evaluating the options before them. Companies adopting best practices in managing their investment options realize substantial gains in their long term bottem line. This book quantifies this performance difference, and what the best practices are across a range of industries.
Why aren't organizations more rigorous in selecting projects? The book outlines several barriers which are extremely relevent:
� It will make a popular champion look bad,
� Organizational resistance to change, or cannibalization of an existing business for a new opportunity,
� We confuse the urgent with the important,
� Its hard to agree on measures and success criteria
� People are afraid of making the wrong prediction, so they don't make any,
� Its hard to normalize results from different contributors,
� Business plans are not integrated with new project activity,
� Power and politics, a methodical evaluation leaves no room for interpretation and "behind the scenes" trade offs between groups and individuals,
� Lack of strategy.
The best practices outlined in this book are backed by substantial research. I would have like to have seen a few additional chapters on application of best practices in real companies ... a case study of a turn around.

One of the best organising frameworks I've met

The Strategic Decisions Group framework for smart organisation is informative. One reason for this is that the authors are reporting a practical benchmark study of R&D which appears to include every American corporate I've ever heard of. They do readers the great favour of synthesising this into a 9 principle framework for Smart Organisation. 3 principles for achieving purpose: -continual learning -value creation culture -creating alternatives 3 principles for mobilizing resources: -open inforamtion flow -disciplined decision making -alignment and empowerment 3 principles for understaning environment: -systems thinking -embracing uncertainty -outside-in strategic perspective What I especially like is that for each principle 5 How do you knows? are given scaling the difference between an organisation which hasn't got a clue about the principle (not smart) to one that lives it (smart org) For example these are the 5 how-you-knows of alignment & empowerment: 1 Examine the strategies at different levels (eg technology strategy to portfolio strategy to project startegy). In smart org: there are clear strategies at all levels taht provide useful guidance for decision making. Strategies at one level are clearly linked to the next. Lower level strategies interpret and carry out the implementation of higher-level strategies. In not-smart: few strategies or they provide little guidance for decision-making. They are viewed cynically as corporate PR. Links among strategies are absent, unclear or ambiguous 2 Examine the value measures used to evaluate decisions at different levels. In smart org: there are clear measures of value at all levels. Value measures at one strategic level are clearly linked through the strategy to measures at the next level. In non-smart: There may be no value measures. If there are, each level sets its own values or decision criteria, with no special requirement that they be related to values and strategies at other levels. 3 Examine the approvals required to make or carry out important decisions. In smart org: Decisions require few approvals because people understand the strategy and are trusted to carry it out. Meetings with upper management are viewed as adding value. In not-smart: Decisions require many levels of approval. Review meetings are perceived as wasting time. Often meetings with upper management are feared because it may redirect efforts and change priorities without clear reason. Upper management often feels overloaded with the need to check on subordinates. 4 Examine the roles of people involved in an important recent decision. In smart orgs: Many people participated in the decision process,at multiple levels in the organisation. A dialogue was carried out in the process that continually aligned and refined the vertical links. Management at different levels collaborated to build a high quality decision and achieved aligned commitment to action. In non-smart: Either few people participated in the decision or so many did that the process got bogged down. Typically, lower level employees make proposals to upper levels for approval or rejection 5 Examine a recent decision that was controversial. In smart org: People unified around the decisions aand carried it out with little intervention. They understood the reasons for the decision and believe the organisation is carrying out a sensible strategy for creating value. This publication is unique among a number of books on cyanobacteria because it focuses on the bioenergetics of these widespread organisms which are the evolutionary prerequisite for the development of all higher forms of life on our "blue" planet. The book primarily addresses questions of energy conversion by the fundamental bioenergetic processes: (oxygenic) photosynthesis, (aerobic) respiration, and (anaerobic) fermentation which uniquely occur together in these prokaryotic cells. Thermophilic cyanobacteria offer the most suitable material for high resolution structure analyses of Photosystem I and II and other electron transport complexes by X-ray crystallography (for example, at present the structure of Photosystem II at atomic resolution is only known for these organisms). These achievements during the last decade represent a milestone in our understanding of the complexes which are crucial for solar energy exploitation through photosynthetic water splitting. The present work represents an ambitious attempt to achieve the goal of a synoptic state-of-the-art picture by casting together the mosaics of detailed knowledge described by leading experts in the field. Another fantastic compilation of sketches!

The book is still satisfyingly thick at 320 pages. 50 artists are featured.

The sketches and artworks are really beautiful and inspiring. There's a lot of variety and the artists commentary talks about their love for sketching, inspiration and some tips. Even in black and white, the designs look terrific. Once again, I'm marvelled by the level of details and intricacy of the many sketches.

This particular volume focuses on sci-fi. I still see quite a significant portion on character designs, in sci-fi style of course. There are also the occasional mechas, sci-fi environments, alien plants, etc.

Most highly recommended to all who loves sketchbooks.

Well worth the money!

Excellent collection of science fiction work

Totally disagree with the bio-bizarre review... sounds like a really narrow idea of what sci-fi is. It's science fiction - which is much more than mechs and transformers. This book is so enjoyable, and represents a nicely curated and varied sampling of the genre. The wide range of techniques and approaches combined with the personal writing is fantastic. These sketching from the imagination books are easily among my favorites.

This isn't a book to teach you how to draw, it's a book that inspires you to create

After falling in love with the Sketching From The Imagination, I was thrilled to find the new Sci-Fi and Fantasy books and they do not disappoint. The Sci-Fi book is filled with some great art and some truly unique styles. There is a great mix of concepts from alien life forms, to spaceships, robots, mechs, spacesuits, and other wild future imaginings. The art alone is worth it. But when you add in the comments and tips from each artist, it really makes this (and the other books in this series) a great place for inspiration and for picking up new ideas and techniques. Of all my art books, the Sketching from the Imagination books are the ones I pick up most often. I love to just flip thru them at random and almost always find myself pulled in and losing track of time.

I recommend these books for anyone whether you are a beginner or an expert or even if you don't draw. These books aren't books that teach you how to draw, they are books that inspire you to create.

So if you want to stir your imagination, or peak behind the curtains and get inside the head of some talented artists, or just enjoy some excellent and sometimes quirky Sci-Fi art, then flip through the pages of this wonderful book. I dare you not to feel inspired to grab a pen or pencil and start some sketches of your own.

About the Author
Amitav Chakravarti is Professor of Marketing at the Department of Management, London School of Economics and Political Science, and wrote part of the book when visiting the Sloan School of Management, MIT. Currently he is on the faculty of University of California, Riverside. Prior to his appointment at LSE, he was an Associate Professor at the Stern School of Business, New York University. He received his PhD from the University of Florida (Go Gators!) and his research has been published in leading journals like Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Consumer Psychology, and Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition. He was awarded the Google-WPP Marketing Research Award and the Marketing Science Institute (MSI) Young Scholar Award, and named among the 'Top 10' instructors at the Department of Management, LSE. Chakravarti spends a lot of his time in the concrete jungles of New York City, but still misses his childhood days growing up near a Rhino reserve.

Manoj Thomas is Associate Professor of Marketing and Director of Business Simulation Lab at the Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University. He trains MBA students and executives to identify and test powerful consumer insights. Thomas has received the Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching. He holds a PhD in marketing from the Stern School of Business at New York University. His specialization is consumer psychology. His research has been published in the Journal of Consumer Research, the Journal of Marketing Research, Marketing Science and Psychological Science. Thomas has received several research fellowships, has been nominated an MSI Young Scholar, and is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Consumer Psychology. I read this book mainly to unearth some useful examples that I could integrate into my lectures, but walked away getting much more out of it. It really breaks down the buying process into a simple model: the GO impulse (which steers consumers towards making a purchase) and a STOP impulse (which steers the away from making a purchase). So, as a marketer, your task is to understand both impulses and do as much as you can to augment one (the GO impulse) while mitigating the other (the STOP impulse). The numerous case studies--across a wide variety of industries (e.g., cereal and automobiles to clothing and retail) help you come up with potentially new ideas on both counts.

The one additional topic that I would have loved to have seen covered is the impact of marketer's decisions on customer well-being (and thinking about it before formulating one's strategies), but that's a small quibble. Overall, a great read!

'Why People (Don't) Buy' is an excellent read to sharpen consumer insights. What I especially appreciated in this book is the discussion on backfires. To take an example that they explored in-depth, when do price discounts increase purchases by weakening the 'Stop' signal, and when do discounts backfire by weakening the 'Go' signal, leading to less liking of the product? Or to take a more novel example, there's been a lot of excitement about '100 calorie' packs for food products, but this might be a complete flop when applied to the wrong kind of product. This book offers a rigorous framework, 'Go-Stop Signal', to address these and other kinds of problems.

Every Chung Kuo Novel a great read and they only keep getting better!

finished The Broken Wheel (Chung Kuo) by David Wingrove and gave it 5 stars. So great to be reading the series again with expanded and all new content as well now being a far less fetched idea in these times overall. Hope that many others will soon pick up the series or give a reread as the rewrite continues! Feverishly awaiting the next installments! Only wish that kindle will start letting there be pre-orders again, haven't offered since the 3rd or 4th book on the US Amazon.

Incredible rich language and imagery

Another piece of the puzzle in the story of Chung Kuo. Devore's careful ploys are starting to unravel, new characters from America come into play, ambition and corruption are as high as ever, while the Seven's power is unable to stop the tide of change. People are not meant to live in a cage, they are more than the sum of bone and tissue and sinew: their soul is restless, unbound by the laws of flesh. And the planet-large white city of Chung Kuo faces the same problem as ever: overpopulation. Incredible rich language and imagery: Wingrove chooses to present his story offering us rich intricate calligraphy style still paintings combined with violent scenes of murder and death, in a Yin-Yang balance of life and death, of sorrow and joy. Simply beautiful.

Popular Series of the 80's

I am very happy that these books are now digital. I still have the paperbacks -- that is how good this series is. The premise is very believable with all the personal and political and social issues that are familiar but set just a bit into the future. This is a series well worth reading several times.

Soils, invaluable indicators of the nature and history of the physical and human landscape, have strongly influenced the cultural record left to archaeologists. Not only are they primary reservoirs for artifacts, they often encase entire sites. And soil-forming processes in themselves are an important component of site formation, influencing which artifacts, features, and environmental indicators (floral, faunal, and geological) will be destroyed and to what extent and which will be preserved and how well. In this book, Holliday will address each of these issues in terms of fundamentals as well as in field case histories from all over the world. The focus will be on principles of soil geomorphology , soil stratigraphy, and soil chemistry and their applications in archaeological research.
