About the Author
Dr John Lommler is a practicing geotechnical engineer with 44 years experience in teaching, consulting and mentoring in Structural and Geotechnical Engineering.� Dr Lommler is principal geotechnical engineer for AMEC in New Mexico and Texas.� He began his career in Ohio in 1967 as a student structural engineer working on power plant projects.� His career changed from structural to geotechnical engineering after studying under and mentoring received from Dr David Timmerman at the University of Akron.
Dr Lommler taught and practiced consulting geotechnical engineering in Ohio until 1991.� When he moved to New Mexico to help his wife’s health, the move introduced him to arid, unsaturated, collapsible soils with Bob Booth and George Beckwith, which reinvigorated his career.� In Albuquerque, he connected with Dr Ralph Peck, who inspired, mentored and encouraged him to continue geotechnical consulting practice past retirement age, mentor younger engineers, and write his book, Geotechnical Problem Solving. ��������������
Dr Lommler has written or co-authored over 1100 geotechnical reports and studies for commercial, municipal, state and federal government clients.� He is author and co-author of several reports on Uranium Mill Tailings disposal cell design available from federal publishing sources, and is co-author of several geotechnical papers published in conference proceedings available from ASCE and the Geo-Institute.

Well Needed Practical Discussion

Geotechnical Problem Solving by Dr. John Lommler offers a practical discussion on numerous issues encountered during the career of a design professional. The text is benefiting me by not being mired in theory (which is necessary, but available in numerous other sources), but addressing the practical questions and concerns that I have come across in my career. I greatly appreciate the candid narrative of Dr. Lommler's adept and refined approach to problem solving. As an example, I have been studying his approach to soil retention using solier pile and lagging design. He offers a simpler method than the traditional passive minus active net force diagram that intimidates many young engineers. He also offers many common mistakes that he has observed during his many years as a reviewer and educator. In short, this work is a welcome and unique addition to the geotechnical literature.

Excellent Resource for Entry Level Geotechnical Engineers

This book has been extremely helpful because Dr. Lommler speaks to you in simple, practical language. The discussions and analogies that Dr. Lommler uses to develop our understanding of geotechnicial problems have been invaluable to me. I completely agree with the statement in the book description that , "this book enables readers to consider how to confidently approach problems having thought through the various options available." The recommended references are also very valuable.

A refreshing change that really works.

The title is too simplistic for the insightful read that it is. It struck a lot of chords on what geotechnical engineering is all about, both from the technical and practice standpoints, as well as a few on life. Cheers Mr Lommler, great read.
