“Even if Holden Caulfield was born in the Bronx in the 1980s, he could never be this awesome.”

Inga Muscio, author of Cunt

Juliet Milagros Palante is leaving the Bronx and headed to Portland, Oregon. She just came out to her family and isn’t sure if her mom will ever speak to her again. But Juliet has a plan, sort of, one that’s going to help her figure out this whole “Puerto Rican lesbian” thing. She’s interning with the author of her favorite book: Harlowe Brisbane, the ultimate authority on feminism, women’s bodies, and other gay-sounding stuff.

Will Juliet be able to figure out her life over the course of one magical summer? Is that even possible? Or is she running away from all the problems that seem too big to handle?

With more questions than answers, Juliet takes on Portland, Harlowe, and most importantly, herself.

About the Author
Gabby Rivera is so damn thankful she was able to finish this book. She wants queer brown girls to see themselves everywhere and to be proud of who they are. Gabby was a nerdburger who always wrote in journals, on stray napkins, and even on her sneakers when it was cool to do that. She’s been published in anthologies and journals put together by other radical, creative folks who also see a world that strays far from the mythic norm. Gabby has worked with Autostraddle for almost five years. In that time, she’s written about feminism, kissing girls, Nicki Minaj, radical politics and falling in love with queer brown communities. She is currently the Youth Programs Manager at GLSEN and is developing their National Student Council and curriculums for GSAs across the country. She’s fostered other LGBTQ youth groups and taught as a multi-media artist for organizations such as the DreamYard Project. She’s gonna write more books, y’all. Please read them. It’s very important. Be on the lookout for her latina punk band sci-fi epic, Supermoon. Coming some time in the distant but gorgeous future.

I'm so glad this book exists
By flickerjax
I'm so glad this book exists. As I was reading I couldn't help but wonder what my life might have been like if I'd read this at 16 or 20. Representation matters for those being represented as much as it does for those who need to see something outside their own world.. Nice to see stories that reflect the varying experiences of queer people of color. But more than that, from a YA perspective, this book was sort of a gentle introduction into learning to question what's going on around you. A lesson in navigating how you can love and respect people and still understand they aren't perfect, and how to weigh what you're taught against it's source. Most importantly, always be asking questions is message I wish was given more, especially to young queers. This book did a bang up job of that.

I don't know anything at all about being Latina or from the Bronx but I'm intimately familiar with crunchy west coast hippie lesbians. The author did an incredibly evocative job of depicting the nuances of that specific creature. And nicely portrayed how we come to understand that people like us are not like us at all (and the more traditional converse of that). This book filled me with the squirmy uncomfortable feeling of being young again and not yet knowing what you don't know. The author left a great road map for how to get there. I hope tons of people read this book, both those it's targeted to and those it's not, and not only enjoy the story, but use it as a reminder to always examine your own understanding of the world.

Made me laugh and equally tugged on my heart-strings even though I have a blackheart that never feels
By Matilda
This book had me from the very opening when Juliet writes a letter to an author of a feminist book. Hell of a letter. She's a 19 year old chubby, Puerto Rican, lesbian feminist who has only just started to question who she is, where she belongs, and the world around her. Her questions take her to Portland to live with a white feminist hippy in search of where she fits in the feminist movement and LGBTQ movement.

This was a great coming of age story that I think reads YA and Adult because a lot of these challenges have nothing to do with age.

And my favorite part of the book was Juliet, the complexity of her life, herself, and her openness to learning. Close second was her family.

A singular queer coming of age story
By Heather H
I've never read a coming of of age story like this. Gabby tugs on so many threads of identity and — racial, queer, feminist — and stitches them together in a story about falling in love with another girl while also learning to love yourself. I'll be drawing strength for my tender heart from this book for a long time.
