"Wrought Iron Cactus" and other abstractions...

Don Van Vliet remains one of the few rock artists to really succeed, in any sincere way, at least, in the world of fine art. Critically praised for his adventurously dissonant and arrhythmic music that melded free jazz and atonality with rock instrumentation, his visual art exudes a different sort of pleasant cacophony.

Though by no means a major figure in the world of modern art, Van Vliet's drawings and paintings garnered enough attention to appear in solo exhibitions in well-known galleries worldwide. The Michael Werner gallery, for one, in New York featured his work on numerous occasions. The gallery printed catalogs for a few of these shows, one of which dates 1991 and features 12 paintings evoking the moods and colors of the desert. Van Vliet lived in a trailer in the Mojave desert for years and the landscape bled into his imagination. The limited earthy palate and titles such as "Wrought Iron Cactus," "Cactus Blaunch," "Circles Don't Fly, They Float" and "Ghost Lemon" suggest a playfulness that many fans of his music will recognize.

The included paintings veer toward the less anthropomorphic of his work. Abstract and indistinct figures inhabit most of these canvases, devoid of recognizable faces or human forms. A multicolored Rorschach of shapes slither over white space as though suspended on an absent limitless background. The images seem to emerge from an ambiguous and dreamy consciousness or from some amorphous level of the limbic system. But paintings such as "Wrought Iron Cactus," featured on the book's cover, also allow a direct connection to the world. Here an indistinct but recognizable cactus lurks just out of focus as though perceived stripped of all human rational categories. Van Vliet's work seems to thrive in this nebulous realm of abstraction that allows a distancing from the rationally controlled and systematized.

The book's opening essay does contain plenty of the inevitable artspeak, but it also contains many interesting observations about modern life and interpretations of Van Vliet's work. It speaks of our repression or socialization that produces convenient falsehoods and of art's purpose of depicting the world beyond human understanding. The author credits Van Vliet's work for embracing the contingent, which many have trouble comprehending or facing, but which these paintings take on wholeheartedly and without remorse.

The book is small in length, about 50 pages, and also in dimension. It probably takes up a little more space than the average mass paperback. Though it's also very well constructed in hardcover and the prints appear on thick, high quality glossy paper that look great despite the size. As elsewhere, here size really doesn't matter.

That Van Vliet managed to straddle the fringe of both musical and visual art remains a remarkable, and largely unappreciated, achievement. Though not all fans of his music will make an appreciative leap to his paintings, a definite continuity exists between the two realms. A naked and unabashed exploration exudes them both as well as a defiant but never self-righteous or pretentious confidence. No shame, just play. Many Beefheart fans will also instantly notice the verbal wordplay of his song lyrics in the paintings' titles. This feature in particular bridges the gap between the two genres.

This and many other books of Van Vliet's art remain difficult to find. Most of them accompanied exhibitions of limited time frame and audience and so were printed in correspondingly limited numbers. But of course the vast internet marketplace has made acquiring these books much easier. And since no single definitive retrospective has yet appeared of Van Vliet's artistic output, books such as this one remain an invaluable source for studying the visual side of this very unique and versatile artist.

About the Author
Tracy D. Terrell (late) received his Ph.D. in Spanish Linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin and published extensively in the area of Spanish dialectology. Professor Terrell’s publications on second-language acquisition are widely known in the United States and abroad.

Magdalena Andrade Received her first B.A. in Spanish/French and a second B.A. in English from San Diego University. After teaching in the Calexico Unified School District Bilingual Program for several years, she taught elementary and intermediate Spanish at both San Diego State and the University of California, Irvine, where she also taught Spanish for Heritage Speakers and Humanities Core Courses. Upon receiving her Ph.D. from the University of California, Irvine, she continued to teach there for several years and also at California State University, Long Beach. Currently an instructor at Irvine Valley College, Professor Andrade has co-authored Mundos de fantas�a: F�bulas, cuentos de hadas y leyendas and Cocina y comidas hispanas (McGraw-Hill).

Jeanne Egasse Received her B.A. and M.A. in Spanish linguistics from the University of California, Irvine. She has taught foreign language methodology courses and supervised foreign language and ESL teachers in training for the Department of Education at the University of California, Irvine. Currently, she is an instructor of Spanish and coordinates the Spanish language Program at Irvine Valley College. El�as Miguel Mu�oz is a Cuban American poet and prose writer. He has a Ph.D. in Spanish from the University of California, Irvine, and he has taught language and literature at the university level. Dr. Mu�oz is the author of Viajes fant�sticos, Ladr�n de la mente, and Isla de luz, titles in the Storyteller's Series by McGraw-Hill. He has published five other novels, two books of literary criticsm, and two poetry collections. His creative work has been featured in numerous anthologies and sourcebooks, including Herencia: The Anthology of Hispanic Literature of the United States, The Encyclopedia of American Literature, and The Scribner Writers Series:Latino and Latina Writers.

Best text on the market for Spanish Instruction

I teach college Spanish and I love this text. It is thoughtfully constructed and provides numerous activities for communication in the target language. Dos mundos also provides very useful ideas for instructors. The pages are colorful and the content engaging. My students love all the activities I use from this text. I wish more Spanish instructors would embrace the methodology presented in Dos mundos. My level one Spanish students actually speak Spanish (albeit low-level Spanish). I don't know if I would recommend this text for independent study, however. I believe it would be most effective if used in conjunction with a dynamic instructor. I do agree that the authors should include a separate English-Spanish dictionary section. I also find the video segments to be very poor (and why are they exactly the same as the ones for Puntos de partida when they both have such different approaches to language acquisition?)

I've been using Dos Mundos in my Spanish III class this fall and it's been a quite positive experience. I'm a former English teacher, and a long time psychologist, so I have some feel for the teaching/learning dynamic of a text. I'm finding DM to be intelligently written and organized, with many different kinds of activities that build on and integrate what you're learning. I like the way history, art, pop culture, geography, politics, music, literature, etc. are interspersed throughout DM. There's cartoons, color, and a reasonably unstilted, good-hearted consciousness in the book. For those of us used to American textbooks which have been reduced to squirmy blandness by pressure groups leaning on state textbook purchasing agencies, it's a bit refreshing to encounter occasional perspectives on economic and political injustice, environmental exploitation, etc. Not that this is a particularly political book, it's just that these things are usually soooooo sanitized. Some people have complained about the lack of an English to Spanish dictionary in this book. Face it---you need to buy a little dictionary to have when you're reading DM and learning Spanish. No added-on dictionary section is going to be complete enough to meet your needs. You'll only be wasting time using it, since half the time the word you're looking for won't be there anyway. You might as well go to the dictionary in the first place. To sum it up: I like this book and I'm in the process of reading the seven chapters which were previously covered in Spanish I and II, which I didn't take in this sequence.

pretty good

this is not a bad spanish book. i don't know if i would say it is great. lots of group activities that are helpful, but they are pretty simple and repetitive. they need to be a little more thoughtful and put in lots of DIFFERENT activities. one last, quite frustrating thing, there is only a spanish-english dictionary in the back. extremely irritating because this is a spanish 1-2 book, and anytime you want to look up a word, you'll need to consult another dictionary.

Best treatment for the "mechanics" of Galois Theory

This is the only book I have seen that "mechanically dissects" galois theory. Other books would give a succession of "theorem-proofs" that eventually proved the Galois solvability theorem but when I was finished, I still could not intuitively understand how the solvability of Galois groups to corresponds to solvability by radicals.
Instead of plodding thru theorem-proof without insight or motivation, this book actually works thru the relation between the algebra of polynomial solutions and the structure of their groups. Ultimately it shows the structure that an equation must have to be solvable (equivalently to have a solvable Galois group).
Unlike the other reader who did not get alot out of Galois' original writing, it opened a window of understanding for me.
Make no mistake, understanding the material here took considerable effort to work out the math on paper to follow the examples and the proofs. Perhaps the book could be improved by adding more detail in places, but then, this is a graduate-level text.
This is the second book I have read from Harold Edwards. I found I learn an awful lot of the low-level details of a subject that I can't find anywhere else. I believe he is one of the best authors in mathematics today. I would happily collect all his works.

Breath the air of Galois

This is not an excellent exposition of Galois theory. It is, however, a book well worth reading for the single reason that it sticks to Galois, including a full translation of Galois' 1831 memoir (13 pages).

The immediate goal for Galois was to understand solvability by radicals, in particular of the general n:th degree equation. But to understand Galois we must first study what was done before him (��1-27). Lagrange is the most important predecessor. He presented a unified approach to the solvable cases (n4 cases. This resolvent business is historical ballast, we would say today, but it is from this tradition that Galois departs. In particular, he arrives at the "Galois group" in terms of resolvents. With the Galois group in place, things flow more smoothly. Essentially as in the modern theory, Galois shows that if an equation is solvable by radicals then its Galois group is "solvable". All this is ��28-48. Edwards the constructivist now inserts a bunch of Kronecker material on the existence of roots (��49-61). Then it's back to Galois (��62-71) to see how he puts his theory to use. Galois doesn't even bother to spell out that the unsolvability of the general equation of degree n>4 follows since its Galois group S_n is not solvable; instead he finds a curious criterion for solvability which is involves no group theory (even Edwards calls this result "rather strange").

Gotta love Edwards

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's a bit weird that other Edwards books have a live link for his name which leads to eight books, none of which are this one. Very strange. Anyway, this is a really nice read that made me understand how a 20 year old kid managed to prove Abel's theorem. When I learned Galois Theory in school it seems ridiculous that a kid could have done that, especially one who hadn't learned any math until he was 15 and then had to do part of the work in prison. It's still one of the most herculean feats in all of math history, but Edwards makes you understand how he approached it in a much more down-to-earth way than is now presented in textbooks. For example he didn't really need the concept of a solvable series of normal subgroup, he just worked with things with prime index and never really needed to get abstract like that. In the end he walks you through Galois actual notes. It's a real beautiful experience. Edwards books are unique, his style is unique and quite refreshing.

Recommended: A very good book on Earthquakes.

This book provides a very good coverage on Earthquakes, from how and why they happen to their effects and safety concerns. You can learn about faults, plates, how earthquakes are sized, how much can be forecasted, how structures are affected, ground acceleration, soil conditions, etc. Though there are numerous examples from California, this is not one of those books which try to provide earthquake checklists to Californians. The level of technicality is one reason I recommend the book. You don't have to be a seismologist to understand the book, but you won't get bored if you are technically oriented. You will get a quantitative feel of concepts in addition to the clear explanations.

Fifth edition brings a good book up to date

This book is readily available used.

"Earthquakes" by Bruce Bolt has been the classic textbook for many years for a non-technical discussion. The fifith edition properly orders the material, and tosses out some outdated material, on earthquake prediction and reservoir-induced seismicity, for example.

It is fairly clear, contains colorful stories from Bruce's decades as Director of the Berkeley Seismological Station, and has a firm scientific grounding. Reading it is no walk in the park, as befits a subject of moderate complexity, but neither is it a dark and stormy night. The accompanying web notes are sketchy, and I just noted some stale links.

This book is California-centric, Bob Yeats has a more Pacific Northwest-centric "Living with earthquakes in the Pacific Northwest", Brumbaugh's "Earthquakes - Science and Society" is more rudimentary in both graphics and prose, and Yanev's "Peace of mind in earthquake country" is more engineering oriented and has been out of print. Susan Hough's "Earthshaking Science" is better written but with far fewer graphics.

Reading this book remains the easiest way to understand earthquakes. The more recent Centennial addition adds little but extra cost Earthquakes: 2006 Centennial Update.

If you only buy one earthquake book, this should be the one.

I spent a lot of time searching for a book explaining earthquakes that wasn't too simple or a text book. Bolt's book is more toward the textbook end of the scale, but is still quite readable. This is not a simple "what to do" book but an explanation of how quakes happen, how they cause damage, what we can do, etc.

Clint Huffman is a Senior Premier Field Engineer in Microsoft’s Premier Field Engineering (PFE) group, where he focuses on Microsoft BizTalk Server, IIS, and Windows performance analysis. Clint is also an author and master trainer for the Microsoft Vital Signs: Performance Monitoring Windows Server workshop. This workshop teaches students the fundamentals of Windows architecture and how to identify performance conditions using performance counters. Clint has been with Microsoft since 1999, and has worked as a Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) support professional, as well as serving in Microsoft Services Labs, where he helped customers test their applications to identify performance bottlenecks.

This is a great guide to performance troubleshooting and increasing ones knowledge in the area.

I got my copy of this by UPS yesterday. First thoughts:

The chapter structure is well laid out for a performance neophyte to start ramping up based on their scenario. It is also very readable and has a good conversational tone. Screen shots are present but not overkill, its a good balance of examples, theory and practical application so far.

I think this is an excellent reference manual for the seasoned IT professional as well as a good start to finish read for someone who wants to really learn how to troubleshoot performance. Well done.

First of all, I am biased ...

I wrote the forward for Clint's book, and I have known him for more than a decade. But, hey, I still have an opinion. The book is absolutely awesome. Clint spends his time in the field working with some of Microsoft's largest customers. He has been doing performance analysis for years, and he is really really good at it. In fact, he has been doing this so long, he wrote some of his own tools (including the PAL tool).

But all of that would mean nothing if Clint could not get his point across ... he can. He is also a great teacher, and has taught performance analysis to hundreds of Microsoft customers. In short, he has worked with the material so long, and with so many different customers, that he knows the questions commonly asked. This is great, because he put it all in the book. The book is well organized, easy to read, and immensely practical. I keep my copy on my desk, so I can refer to it -- the book is that good.

It was poorly written, the humor did not appeal to me and I, foolishly did not read enough of the reviews and description to know what I would be getting. Oh well, live and learn.

I knew this was a parody when I bought it, however I thought it would be a good parody. Turns out it's so silly I felt like I was wasting my time on this one. Seems to be from the point of a second grader and a vulgar one at that! Even 2.99 is too much for this book. Just say no. Just no
