Nicest introduction to chess I have ever seen

I have seen countless books on chess aimed at youngsters over the years, but this is probably the nicest introduction I have ever seen, aimed at primary school children. The problem with so many books is that they are too ambitious, too wordy or just downright boring, but such criticisms in no way apply to this latest addition.

The game is taught through the medium of a cartoon character, George, and his pet alligator, Kirsty, a self-proclaimed Grand Alligator of Chess. The large format pages and large diagrams are easier on the young eye, and the language is readily accessible to a young age group.

The book consists of six parts. Part One covers the basics of how the pieces move, then subsequent parts take the young beginner through a succession of easy, welldefined stages, until by the end of the book you are able to play through and understand a complete game. The book is also very much inter-active, as there are tests interspersed at regular intervals throughout.

As I said earlier, over-ambition is the main problem with so many beginners books, but here the authors have set out with the very limited objective of getting the child started on a very basic level. Opening theory, middlegame strategy and endgame technique have no place here. The emphasis is on learning the basics in an enjoyable manner. If you have a young child or relative who wants to learn chess, then I can thoroughly recommend this book, which in addition to everything I have already said comes at a very reasonable price.

Re-discovered chess with this excellent teaching book

We took the extended family on a trip to Florida a couple of months ago, and picked up a plastic chess set together with this book for the children. We hoped they might learn, but we could hardly predict they would become besotted. The book was a mega-hit.

Although both my father-in-law (from Switzerland) and I had played a fair bit of chess in our younger days, neither of us were completely up with the rules. Having this book was useful as both a refresher course and to consult in case of dispute.

I had expected CHESS FOR CHILDREN would be at least an adequate book, as a local chess coach had steered me towards it, but it was better than that, which has prompted me to do this review. The content is brilliant, and I can only agree with other reviews that this has the clearest lay-out of any chess beginner book.

Another unexpected bonus was that the kids were able to follow everything in the book without the help of an adult, even learning chess notation. Visually the book scores well, being a solid hardcover with a good mix of chess moves and illustrations.

The book divides nealy into six parts, starting with setting up the chessboard, and progressing to how each piece moves and some elementary advice on strategy. The first holiday where arcade games were almost forgotten!

Captivating and well-organized

I gave this book to my son, aged 5, and was impressed when he sat down and read it for two hours straight. As an elementary school teacher as well as a chess player, I would recommend this book for teaching a child how to play. It is well-organized and starts with the basics - the name of each piece, how each piece moves, how to set up a chessboard.
The format is large and the diagrams and arrows are attractive. My son was particularly excited by the Terribly Tough Tests that were set every few pages, with solutions at the back of the book. The authors have got the level exactly right, which in my experience very few beginner books achieve. There are sections on chess notation, draws, basic checkmates and some simple tactics, but these are all extras - the primary aim is to teach the rules and moves of chess to a youngster, and in this the book succeeds well.
The benefits of chess in teaching logical thinking are well known, and it has even been proved that chess can improve a child's skill at maths. As a genuinely instructional primer, this is easily the best I have seen.

To try an animal in a court of law for "crimes" and then sentence it to imprisonment or death seems barbaric, but for hundreds of years until the mid-19th century this practice was commonplace in Europe, and became the subject of a book called Criminal Prosecution and Capital Punishment of Animals. They include: an eight-month trial of a flock of weevils, for damaging vines—although the insects were found guilty, the sentence is unknown because the foot of the relevant parchment was eaten by insects. A pig tried found guilty of strangling and killing a baby in its cradle—the sentence was death and the pig was hanged. A group of rats who were summoned to court for eating the local barley, but failed to turn up—their defense counsel successfully argued that they had probably not received the summons and should be let off. There were even trials of inanimate objects, such as a Russian bell put on trial for abetting insurrection. It was found guilty and exiled to Siberia.

Yes, they did try animals for witchcraft. I am an amateur medievalist so this was especially interesting to me - but if you are a church history buff it may also be a good read for you. Clear, informative, fun.

This is the 2010 version and the new version came out in 2015. How they can still rent this out is beyond me! I couldn't even do the pretest because the code in the front of the book didn't work.

He provides a glimpse of the mystic rites that used to take place in Ancient Egypt for people who had the desire and strength to become initiates in those times.
Those of you who have read Rudolph Steiner's book 'The Gospel of St. John' in the chapter 'The Raising of Lazarus' will be able to link the explanation provided there with the explanation of Jesus's message that these rites are no longer required to become one with God.
An excellent book........my quest continues.

Thought Provoking

Osho's teachings and philosophy, evident in Intimacy, are full of irreverence, sensitiveness, craziness, paradoxes, common sense and profound wisdom.

Intimacy is not a book about physical intimacy, but a book about emotional intimacy. The book is structured, basically, in chapters that discuss those elements that prevent you from becoming truly intimate with somebody else (the habit of reaction, being stuck on security, shadow-boxing, and being attached to false values), and those that will help you to become intimate (learn to relate without having a relationship, be true to yourself, listen to and accept yourself, trust yourself, learn to be vulnerable, be "selfish", learn the language of silence, and meditate), plus an introduction on what Intimacy is and is not, and a final section devoted to Q&A.

The language of the book is very simple and easy to understand, with a constant use of parables and metaphors. Osho was a lecturer and teacher after all, and his writing is a direct reflection of that, as this book, as others are a transcription of public speeches given by him. On the other hand, he is not a native English, so his English is straight forward and simple, and not the usual cryptic philosophical dry jargon that can drive you nuts.

Intimacy is full of wisdom, good advice and food for thought, which will resonate with you whether you are in a relationship or not, looking for one or not, you are a very social person or a reserved one. Intimacy will especially speak to you if you aren't a traditional person in the way you approach society, family, religion, gender roles and the world in general, but you need of help to clear your mind in periods of emotional distress or confusion, and when you need a wise adviser who is not at hand, or the advice you get doesn't provide you with any answers.

A few things I would like to criticise about Intimacy:
> Osho seems to be carried out by his own discourse, and he becomes repetitive and loopy in many occasions.
> Osho equals self-love with selfishness. Although some of his arguments are terrific and this equation is not straightforward, it is a dangerous association. I wonder whether the use of the word selfish/ness is the result of a linguistic calque from an Hindu word with a different meaning. Still, the identification doesn't work for me. I agree that self-love is a catalyst of change, that you cannot give that you don't have, and that you have to give voluntarily without restrictions. Put your mask first and then help others then (as they say on the safety instructions on a plane) is one thing. And put your mask and help others if you want or feel like it, is a very different one. Being selfish and self-centred, even if it is not in a narcissist way, is a bit unnatural, to me. Sharing is impossible if one is self-centred and selfish.
> Osho's criticism of self-improvement and goal setting. Be content with the present, simple be, do not think about the future and how to change it, do not waste your time on anything that is not this very moment, you are perfect and do not need of any improvement. Be happy being. I believe that living the present and being present are wonderful things, and also that setting goals to be socially praised or get fame is a senseless thing to do. I also believe that setting goals and self-improvement are necessary, and a way of getting rid of the limitations and conditioning that our time, society, family, gender or past negative experiences put on our shoulders. I also believe that self-improvement is done for our own sake, not for the public. My own life experience contradicts Osho's teachings in this regard.

I would not recommend this book, or any of Osho's, to anybody who is very traditional in values and way of living, or anybody who is a very religious person (meaning, very attached to a certain Church or religion with fixed views on God and the spirit). You've been warned. If you do, and become offended, you are the only one to blame.

OSHO!

Beyond him possibly being a cult leader, you cannot deny the greatness that was Osho's mind. His stories, transcribed from his speeches and Q&A with the people who visited him, are like poetry. So what that he might have been a little off his rocker, a lot of the smartest people were :-) And there's a lot of positive things that you can extract from his books if you can look past the controversy that surrounded him. I usually highlight whatever I like from a book, after awhile I had to be really picky about what I liked the most because Osho shared so much wisdom, I didn't realize how much I was highlighting. Keep in mind that Osho was a Buddhist, so there is a lot of concepts that come from Buddhism in this book, but I feel that it really is appealing for anyone of any religious background to read. I loved this book.

Very good insight...some things about God did not quite gel with me...learning to love oneself is very well explained...living in in the here and now is very understandable...giving and receiving is also well explained...how to threat others is another topic I enjoyed...well written...

they would cause more harm to the very poor the authors seek to help

Because author Gregg Barak on page 262 of his book described my analysis of one his articles as a “hatchet job,” by which I assume he means unfair criticism, I will respond to his remarks about my newspaper column from 1987.

Barak makes a number of errors in the single paragraph he devotes to responding to my column. He states that I devoted my “entire editorial” to critiquing his piece. In fact, my analysis appeared in my bylined column and not in an editorial. Columns are the opinion of the author. Editorials are the opinion of the newspaper and are unsigned.

(By the way, the “entire” column consisted of a mere 486 words, and I used nearly half that space presenting Barak’s points.)

As clearly stated on the column itself, I was then the editorial page editor of The Mobile Press, the afternoon edition of The Mobile Press Register, and not of the overall newspaper.

Barak says that his article was distributed “statewide,” but then seems to criticize me for commenting on it because it “had not been published within 150 miles of Mobile.” For those unfamiliar with Alabama geography, a distance of 150 miles from Mobile takes in almost the entire southern half of the state. Apparently, “statewide” distribution doesn’t include anywhere south of Montgomery, where Barak was stationed at the time.

Barak writes that whether my “remarks were correct is beside the point.” Perhaps that is because they were correct, but Barak doesn’t seem to concern himself much with accuracy or truth. Although he calls my analysis a “hatchet job,” he never states where my comments were unfair.

I will do something Barak did not do. I will provide you with my entire column so that you may decide for yourself if it is I or Barak who is guilty of a hatchet job. One interesting thing to note from the column: Barak’s outlandish prediction that “75 percent of all working Americans will be living in poverty by 2000.” The passage of time has put the lie to much of what Barak said.

Here is my column from June 28, 1987:

“Two Montgomery educators are distributing a fallacy-laden opinion article on the causes of poverty in Alabama to the state’s newspapers in the hope of generating support for their proposed solutions.

“If the proposals in the article were actually undertaken, they would cause more harm to the very poor the authors seek to help.

“The article was written by Gregg Barak and Charlotte Pagni. Barak has a doctorate in criminology and is chairman of the Department of Criminal Justice at Alabama State University in Montgomery. Charlotte Pagni has a master’s degree in film, is an educator and serves as the community relations coordinator for Aid to Inmate Mothers.

“Among the fallacies put forth by the authors are: More and more members of the middle class are slipping into poverty and becoming the ‘new poor;’ the number of poor is increasing rapidly; the state’s high infant mortality rate, high utility bills for the poor and low quality of social services result from rich landowners dominating Alabama politics; 75 percent of all working Americans will be living in poverty by 2000.

“Barak and Pagni assert that, ‘As the gulf between the “haves” and “have-nots” continues to widen, the only viable solution involves a fundamental redefinition of work and a redistribution of our resources.’

“Among the solutions proposed in the article are: construction of affordable housing, provision of health and child care, increasing the minimum wage, creation of more jobs and better education.

“Barak and Pagni never present any specific evidence to back up their broad generalizations about the ‘causes’ or scope of poverty in Alabama. Their generalizations, in fact, are a localization of the purported findings of some poorly done national studies. Those national studies—purporting to show that the middle class is declining, homelessness increasing, manufacturing disappearing, etc.—received a great deal of publicity when the findings were released.

“Those studies and findings have since been highly discredited because of faulty methodology and reasoning. That has not been well-publicized.

“Among the newest findings: When ranked by income, the middle three-fifths of the population receive about 52 percent of the total national income—a proportion virtually unchanged since 1947 when such statistics began being kept; for every 10 percent increase in the minimum wage, there is a loss of between 100,000 and 200,000 jobs; from 1981 through 1986, the proportion of all blacks who have jobs went up by 5.5 percent—while the increase for whites was only 2.5 percent.

“The coldness of poverty has but one cause: the lack of the heat of economic activity. The real power of a free market society is its ability to create wealth. Barak and Pagni don’t understand that and never touch on proposals that would create wealth and lift people from poverty. Instead, they propose merely the same old failed statist solutions of redistribution income.

“If Barak’s and Pagni’s proposals are ever adopted, then we will see a declining middle class.”

About the Author
Wilfred L. F. Armarego graduated BSc (Hons) in 1953 and PhD from the University of London in 1956 and came to Australia in that year. After two years at the Central Research Laboratories (ICIANZ) in Melbourne, where he worked on plant growth substances, and one year on potentially carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons at the University of Melbourne as Senior Demonstrator in Organic Chemistry, he joined the Department of Medical Chemistry as a Research Fellow in 1960. He became a Fellow in 1963 and was awarded a DSc degree (London) in 1968. He was promoted to Senior Fellow in 1967 and began research work on the biochemistry and molecular biology of pteridine-requiring enzymes related to the inherited metabolic disease phenylketonuria and its variants. He was head of the Protein Biochemistry Group and Pteridine Biochemistry Laboratory until his retirement in 1996. He is now a visiting fellow at the John Curtin School of Medical Research, and member of the editorial boards of ‘Medicinal Research Reviews’ and ‘Pteridines’ journals.

I am very satisfied with this book

It is difficult to make any statements of validity from my point of view as I am not trained in, nor educated in the field of chemistry except through self teaching. This wealth of information can only be the result of a river of sweat churned out by chemists living throughout the ages of which the authors drank heartily who then through much trial and sweat of their own gave it to us as honey. This book holds overwhelming amounts of it's subject matter and the methods to purify through straight forward descriptive techniques. I am very satisfied with this book!

About the Author
Andrew Parr is an Industrial Control Engineer, recently retired from ASW Sheerness Steel, Sheerness, UK who worked in the steel industry for over thirty years. In 1980 he began specializing in sequence and closed loop control systems using Programmable Controllers (PLCs) with hydraulic and pneumatic actuators. He has written fifteen books on electronics and process control including Logic Designers Handbook, Industrial Control Handbook, Programmable Controllers, Control Engineering, along with many amateur- level books, among them Introduction to Operational Amplifiers. His books have been widely translated into many languages, including Japanese, Polish, and Swedish. He and has presented papers at various international conferences, including ones on “Automation Systems in the Steel Industry” and on “Automated Fault Diagnostics”.

very good for beginners

This book is worth the money. It is easy to read and doesn't overwelm with info. Very good for someone getting started in this field. I also suggest youtube videos after reading this book.

If you have a little knowledge on hydraulics, this particular book on the subject will leave you with enough information and knowledge to have a sensible high level conversation with some of the top engineers in the business. "Buy it, you won't regret it". Eddy Sayer.
