The 2011 conference was no exception and the arrival of v3.0 has brought many more features and a new range of applications, from the analysis of ancient Arabic and old English texts to the analysis of conversations held by the Mars500 mission s astronauts. At the 2011 conference, members of the European Meta-Net CESAR project announced that NooJ will soon be available Open Source and will become the de-facto standard tool for Corpus processing in European research in Social Science. Today, NooJ is used as a research tool in over 30 academic and research centers in the world and there are NooJ modules available for over 20 languages. The international NooJ conference is organized every year; 50 participants present their work in the domains of Linguistic formalization, Corpus processing and Natural Language Processing applications. The present volume contains a selection of papers from the NooJ 2011 International Conference which was held from 13 15 June 2011 in Dubrovnik, Croatia. This volume presents problems dealing with machine translation, information extraction, processing of multi-word units, automatic disambiguation, semantic analysis, and psychological and literature analysis of various corpora.

About the Author
Kristina Vu kovi is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of Information Sciences at the University of Zagreb, Croatia, where she began to work as a research assistant in 2000 on a project entitled Machine Understanding of Natural Languages. She has more than thirty published papers in the areas of natural language processing, with a special interest in NooJ. Bo o Bekavac (linguist and information scientist) is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Zagreb, Croatia. He received his PhD (2005) at the same Faculty with a dissertation entitled Automatic Named Entities Recognition in Croatian Texts. He has participated in several European and nationally funded projects. He has published approximately twenty papers in the fields of Named Entity Recognition and Classification (NERC), corpus linguistics, linguistic tools (NooJ, INTEX), computational linguistics and mark-up languages (XML, SGML). Max Silberztein is a Professor at the Université de Franche-Comté, France, where he teaches Computational Linguistics. He is the author of INTEX and NooJ which are development environments used to formalize various linguistic phenomena, from the orthography level to the semantic level.

About the Author
D. H. FIGUEREDO is Director of the Library and Media Center at Bloomfield College. He has taught courses on Latin American literature at Montclair State University and Bloomfield College. He was one of the editors of the Encyclopedia of Cuba (Greenwood, 2002) and has written several other works of fiction and nonfiction. He regularly contributes to Booklist, Multicultural Review, and other publications.

DO NOT GET THE KINDLE VERSION

I've seen the author's Ted Talk and followed the crowd funding for this book. I really wanted to like it. However, the Kindle version of the book is designed for art, not for functionality (reading).

It is virtually impossible to read on a tablet because of the small print (and inability to increase the size), the colors used (example, dark orchid background for small black font), and the navigation. Tried to read it in the alternative on my computer. No dice.

I've purchased several hundred Kindle books in the past couple of years. This is the first one for which I've requested a refund.

If they fix the electronic version, I'll also remove this Kindle review upon request.

In short, avoid the Kindle version like the plague. The print edition should be fine (knock on wood). If I get the print edition, I'll update this review to address the content.

I purchased the print edition and have taken the time to go through it before writing this update.

The substance of the book is good. However, the design gets in the way of using it for its intended purpose - learning Chinese characters.

It's clear after seeing both the Kindle and print editions that the Kindle edition consists of imaged pages from the print edition rather than doing formatting for the Kindle. For that, the person in charge of layout for the Kindle should be sent to the woodshed with a dunce cap.

Unfortunately, the printed pages suffer from some of the same issues that afflict the Kindle. Specifically, the many pages with dark-colored backgrounds with small black font are difficult to read. In some cases, it requires taking the book to different lighting or using a magnifying glass to figure out what's written.

In other words, the purpose of learning Chinese characters is actually frustrated by the author's efforts as an artist.

In short, here's my rating unless and until the book is fixed.

0 Stars for the Kindle edition. It's horrible.
3 Stars for the Print edition if you want to actually learn the characters.
5 Stars for the Print edition if you want a colorful book to put on the coffee table to impress friends but have no intention of actually learning Chinese characters.

Great coffee table book, not so great for learning Chinese characters

I'm sad I missed the Kickstarter on this since I would have backed it because I love anything about learning Chinese language and it's a pretty nice idea. The book is colorful, bright and the Kickstarter backers should be proud that they helped something this pretty come to fruition. With its strong graphic design sensibilities and colorful content, it's a great book for anyone's coffee table.

Unfortunately for the learning side of things, it's not very good. I'm writing this review only because I think folks should know what exactly they're buying. While the pictures are clever, many times, the associations are a stretch and they just don't seem effective as memory devices. Also, the book switches between traditional and simplified characters seemingly to facilitate the illustrations, which can be confusing for students who would actually like to read one or the other. On top of that, some of the words that are illustrated are just not used any more (nuan2 - argue or xuan1 - shout, for example). Definitely helpful though if you're reading ancient Chinese poetry, which I'm sure, most folks are not. Of course, for that, it's not enough content.

I don't think this is a good resource for learning Chinese characters. Honestly, if the pictures thing works for you, I'd highly recommend Tuttle Learning Chinese Characters: A Revolutionary New Way to Learn and Remember the 800 Most Basic Chinese Characters since they actually put together more of a system with their images and a LOT of great explanations of how everything works. I do,however, think that Chineasy is a unique coffee table book. Unfortunately, I don't have a coffee table.

Not what I hoped for when I read the description

I thought this book would be different from the various other books that I have purchased over the years. I thought this book would introduce the reader to a few characters and them provide a short story using those characters as a way of helping the reader remember them. Not so. While the images are cute, the author just throws character after character at the reader with no opportunity to use them together and no opportunity to review them.

I am looking for a book or series of books that do a "Look Dick, see Spot run" approach. I would like to see a book that introduces ten or twenty characters and phrases, and then uses those characters to tell a simple story. Then I could read that story over and over again to help learn those characters. Then, of course, the book(s) would build on that by introducing more characters and more simple little stories.

This book sounded like it would do that, but it doesn't. By page 44, about 90 characters and short phrases have been introduced but no stories connecting them and no way to review them. At the end of the book, the story of Peter and the Wolf is told in English, not in Chinese. There are characters for the main players in the story, but no story. No way to put those characters together as a story. Thus, no real opportunity to learn how to read Chinese.

New Anamie books for Linda Howard

At first I liked the comic book version of "Cutting Edge", but then I bought "Mackenie's Magic" and "A Game of Chance" and the female and male characters were the same in the 2 books. Then I noticed almost all the men and women in these books looked the same. Can't they draw more that one female and male. Small heads on all the men too! The font for the words was so small, in the last 2 books, I had to stretch the image and move it around to read it. It also reduces her wonderful books to just a few pages, and that is the biggest crime. They ought to do a better job with the images and fonts, and not strip the story down to about 500 words.

Love This Book!

I normally don't write a review unless I find the product to be very useful. I love this book! It is exactly what I was looking for. There is information regarding this subject on the internet. However, nothing I did find in other books or the internet really explained the process, supplies, etc... as this little book does. Yes, the book does not have a lot of pages. But, to be honest, I actually appreciate the fact that the information here is clear, precise, direct, to the point and gives the reader EXACTLY what she needs to start this type of business. Nobody wants a hundred pages of something or nothing useless information. There is something to be said about "Quality versus Quantity". This book delivers "quality" information. I ordered a few books on party planning with the idea that I would like to offer tea parties for children. Nothing I found compares to this little book. It doesn't cover a lot of the business aspect, but certainly covers Party Booking Terms and so forth. The other books I have read will help with the "business" aspect. I feel 100 percent better and more confident that I can run this type of business thanks to this book.

This book is an absolute joke. There is no more information in here than you would know purely from common sense if you thought about a tea party birthday business. If anything, it should have been a very inexpensive ebook. Save your money and and just make a list of ideas for yourself. This had no information whatsoever regarding the business end of things.

About the Author
John Berger was born in London and now lives in a small village in the French Alps. Most recently he has written the novels "To the Wedding "and "King."
Patricia Macdonald studied at Edinburgh University, receiving her doctorate in 1973. She is well known for her innovative, award-winning aerial images. Her previous publications include "Shadow of Heaven, Order & Chaos, "and "Views of Gala. "

Monty Berger currently resides in Westmont, Quebec. Brian Jeffrey Street, a documentary filmmaker and journalist, lives in Ottawa.

Good read, unusual points of view

John Berger is not your mainstream art critic. He is an independent thinker and is nobody's fool. You may find his Marxist rhetoric somewhat dated and his references to bourgeois class even silly, but his style is strong, he's informed intellectual with whom you may disagree but will respect and, if you opened, will learn few things.

Berger attributes Picasso failure (assuming you know where Picasso had succeeded) to his selection of inferior subject matter. Being of Marxist's creed, Berger would prefer for Picasso to select his subjects from a set of social problems which will connect him to a 'working class', a nation, or a movement, rather than be confined to a personal expressions. He's OK with his blue-pink period of 'being a social outcast' and considers his cubist period as his best. He also finds the merit in his work of post-war years and sees his work in decline starting from fifties. His accusations are not completely groundless but are disputable. His astute criticism of cubism, its connection with natural sciences, quantum mechanics, its simultaneity of multiple views as a way or organizing information, these are the most interesting passages I enjoyed.

I like Berger's dissenting views as a stimuli for discussion. He will not bow to the overwhelming Picasso admiration and is not afraid to provides critique that alone drives our knowledge forward. I found his book interesting and useful.

One of the best Picasso books

This book offers a different view of Picasso's life and work. Some of John Berger's insights are profound, some are revolutionary, some are radical. and many are brilliant ('although I don't think Berger would necessarily enjoy my use of the word "brilliant"). If you are interested in the 20th century's most influential visual artist this is a "must read."

What's a genius anyway?

John Berger is a critic with a real sense of decency: never too high-falutin, smart and responsible. He asks us to see beautiful objects, not in their staid isolation in the museum setting, but in the context of social history. It is obvious that Picasso was a genius. He saw and drew things that evoke wonders and passions. But is that all?
The central essay here is "The Moment of Cubism." Berger paints a general portrait of a distinct era of possibility: artistic and social and political. The explosion of Cubism is but a moment in a larger moment of real revolution. Not just "ways of seeing" but ways of living, thinking, hoping. Berger reminds us that Picasso needed the times (Europe), he also, more specifically needed friends and support. After all, there were two who brought forth cubism; moreover, there were the likes of Cezanne.
Berger asks the question that is overlooked in the constant reverence of Picasso's potency (echoing Benjamin Buchloh on the "ciphers of regression"): was Picasso genius throughout his career or was that moment (historical and aesthetic) the real genius?
