Fantastic Novella Addition to The Steampunk Chronicles

I enjoyed this little novella so much more than The Dark Discovery of Jack Dandy, mostly because I felt like this really was a novella rather than just being a tease for the other books in the series.

However, if you haven't been reading the Steampunk Chronicles then you definitely need to pick them up before reading this or you're going to be incredibly confused. If you have been reading them, you're definitely going to want to pick this up because it's going to give you all sorts of insight into Jasper, Cat and a couple other plot points going on in the other books. And omgoodness is this a fantastic little addition to the series!

Everything that went down between Jasper and Mei in The Clockwork Collar had my heart aching for him, but I really liked Cat and I was hoping that the two of them would get together... now they're finally getting a THIRD chance after it hasn't worked out for them twice - the question is, are they willing to put their hearts on the line after having them broken twice before? Ms. Cross packed quite a bit of information / plot into this little novella, making it move quickly and concisely. It whetted my appetite for more of her writing as well as making me incredibly happy to see Jasper again and get to see more of him and Cat together =) That hottie cowboy deserved some breaks!

Not a Wild Adventure more a Romance

Wildcat, Jasper's ex is back and in London looking for her sister, who ran off with a lord who lives there. I really wanted to know what Jasper was doing when he was M.I.A. in The Girl with the Iron Touch and was happy the author wrote a novella to tell us where he was. I loved Cat in the second book and loved her even more in this one. You get insight about Jasper and Cat's feelings for each other in this book and more about their failed relationship which I also was thrilled to learn about. Overall I really liked it but it wasn't as good as the other 2 novellas.

Well... I don't actually remember much of the story. Granted it's been a month since I read it. But it obviously didn't make much of an impact. I read it when I was reading through the whole series, and I do remember that it explained something that happened in one of the novels. If you're reading the series and really enjoying the full-length novels, you may enjoy it, but I wouldn't recommend it outside of that context. It's okay, but not compelling enough to stand alone.

The first two describe and characterize the German policies towards the natives of South West Africa and their mutual relationship, prior to the Herero war and during it respectively. The third is concerned with definitions of genocide and relevance for its aplication on the Herero war. In the first chapter I shortly portray South West Africa prior to European colonisation and then turn my attention to German - steady and gradual - conquest of the country. Special consideration is given to German perceptions of the natives, to their use of the natives for their own cause and to their treatment of the indigenous population. Finally the most important aspects of development of the colony under German rule are presented. The next chapter of the thesis deals with the events of the Herero war. Analysis of the main causes of the uprising is followed by the description of the course of war. This one is purposefully not very detailed, and only events relevant for our cause are mentioned. Much more attention is given to German changing policies during the war and to the differing arguments behind these policies, with special focus on Lothar von Trotha's reasoning. Even after resuming his visual work, Picasso continued to write, in a characteristic torrent, until 1959, leaving a body of prose poems that Andr� Breton praised as “an intimate journal, both of the feelings and the senses, such as has never been kept before.” Similarly struck by the poems' originality, Michel Leiris wrote, “If we must compare him, despite his fierce singularity, in order to try and situate him on the literary map, I see only James Joyce.” Near the end of his life, Picasso himself was quoted as having “told a friend that long after his death his writing would gain recognition and encyclopedias would say: 'Picasso, Pablo Ruiz--Spanish poet who dabbled in painting, drawing and sculpture.'“ For the past five years, poets Jerome Rothenberg and Pierre Joris have overseen a project to translate the majority of this writing into English for the first time. Working from Picasso's original Spanish and French (he wrote in both languages), they enlisted the help of over a dozen contemporary poets in order to mark, as they note in their introduction, “Picasso's entry into our own time.” This is indeed a new Picasso for most of us, or rather, a renewed Picasso: the poems are as protean, erotic, scatological and experimental in form as his visual art has always been described. But amid the ubiquitous posters, t-shirts and tchotchkes, how many of us have truly felt the impact of Picasso's visual work as powerfully as it was perceived in the first half of the twentieth century? The poems give us a twenty-first-century Picasso, free of clich�. Perhaps they will even spark a revival of interest in his “dabblings.”

picasso was an amazing poet

From his sense of slippage, where each word organically leads to the next as if a natural as opposed to surreal thread were leading his muse... to the concrete and colorful imagery deployed, ...Count of Orgaz is an amazing product. Like many other painters before and since, there is a different sensibility from that of the musician or sound poet: the poem skips many layers of intentionality or meaning, seeming to reconvene with these when convenient or needed. The 20th century sense of anguish is certainly present in these poems, which make them a dark read, but so too is a prevaling sense of hope, honesty, fun and sensual richness. The man was a survivor and here, his artistry depicts that process in an intimate, not usually seen light. - Stanley Gemmell
