This book is a tour de force in MSK ultrasound. The authors comprehensively cover this expanding area of a technically driven field. Logically presented with multiple diagrams and images. Easy to read and well referenced. The normal anatomical section prior to pathology presentation prepares the reader for comparision between normal and abnormal imaging. This manual must be considered the gold standard reference. A must for those who have an interest in sono-anatomy, rehabilitaitve ultrasound imaging and through to the Diagnostic ultrasound imaging sonographer or radiologist. Consider this a must for ultrasound imaging

The Challenge: “Could you find out what’s going on with the gobi web server? Customer order e-mails aren’t being sent out, and the thing’s chugging under a big load…” Rob e-mailed the development team reminding them not to send marketing e-mails from the gobi web server…. “Customer service is worried about some issue with tons of disputed false orders….” Rob noticed a suspicious pattern with the “false” orders: they were all being delivered to the same P.O. box…He decided to investigate the access logs. An external JavaScript file being referenced seemed especially strange, so he tested to see if he could access it himself…. The attacker was manipulating the link parameter of the login.pl application. Rob needed to see the server side script that generated the login.pl page to determine the purpose….

The Solution: After reviewing the log files included in the challenge, propose your assessment: What is the significance of the attacker’s JavaScript file? What was an early clue that Rob missed that might have alerted him to something being amiss? What are some different ways the attacker could have delivered the payload? David Pollino has a strong background in security, wireless, and networking. David is currently a security practitioner working in financial services. During his career as a consultant and network engineer, David has worked for clients across multiple industries, including financial services, service providers, high technology, manufacturing, and government. Bill Pennington, CISSP, has six years of professional experience in information security and eleven years in information technology. His duties at WhiteHat include managing research and development, guiding product and technology direction, managing web application assessment teams, and developing and delivering WhiteHat Security training. Bill has performed web application assessments for more than four years in a variety of industry verticals including financial services, e-commerce, and biotechnology. I bought this book for one reason: wireless

I've been looking for a resource that would be useful as a recommendation to the students in my wireless training classes. There've been plenty teaching wireless security and penetration philosophically, but I wanted a practical - get your hands dirty - approach. It's here! Hackers Challenge 3 contains a great "case study" of a hack attack on a wireless network and gives you the insights you need to analyze such an attack.

In addition, you get information related to other newer attacks like phishing, VoIP vulnerabilities and social engineering. This is a great book and MUST be in every security technician's library.

A Digest of the New World of Hack Attacks

What struck me about this book is that the attacks are all brand new. This isn't just a rehash of the same old attacks we read about over and over again, nor is it a rehash of the attacks - but on steroids - from the previous Hacker's Challenge books. The day of the simple port scan and null session enumeration are long gone. Today's world is much more complicated and scarier. Hacker's Challenge 3 proves it.

And these aren't off-the-wall attacks cooked up in hidden computer labs by researchers. They're the type of threats now, unfortunately, becoming more commonplace to any one in information security.

The chapters on phishing are real-life and could've been taken right out of the playbook of an actual attack perpetrated against a real bank. The steps for investigating, tracking down and bringing down malicious phishing sites closely follow those actually taken by information security professionals on the job.

Another attack presented is pharming, a new and frightening type of DNS poisoning that threatens financial and e-commerce web sites. The description of the attacks is very accurate. It's almost as if you were working with the team trying to block the attack.

Hacker's Challenge 3 is written by a star-studded cast of well-known industry players, each a top notch expert in their specialty in the field.

For each attack, this book provides a complete set of steps for detection, resolution, prevention and evasion of future attacks. There are detailed examples of the forensics examination used to track down both the attack and its offending attackers, including samples of analyzed logs and data that would be used by an actual threat and incident management team in action on a case.

Each chapter has a series of questions that add to the material and provide thought-provoking points for further discussion.

This is a digest of the new world of Twenty-First Century attacks that should be read by every information security professional.

Hacker's Challenge 3

This is a book that can serve two different purposes. For the security expert the book provides 20 real world security issues along with the appropriate logs and challenges them to work out what type of attack is being performed, how it is being performed, and what needs to be done to fix it and prevent it happening again. For those with an interest in security but who are not experts the book provides an entertaining series of tutorials that introduce several types of security breach, what they are, how to detect them, and what to do to stop them or at leasdt mitigate the effects.

The 'challenges' that are described in the book cover a range of different methods that have been used to breach the security of various computer networks. Each challenge provides a all of the essential pieces of information that would be available to be examined by security experts dealing with the problem (trimmed of much of the irrelevant logs). Sufficient information is actually provided to enable someone with a sufficient knowledge of security to work out both what type of attack has taken place and how the attack was done. They should then have no trouble in answering the series of questions about the particular attack that appear at the end of each challenge before turning to the solutions section to check their answers.

The challenges also provide excellent tutorials for novice security staff to find out how to extract and interpret information in order to determine what has happened.

I always thought of computer security as a necessary but boring subject but the authors of this book have managed to make it both informative and entertaining. If you are a security specialist looking to take the "hacker's Challenge" and test how much you know or if you are just someone wanting to learn more about some of the latest security threats then this book will provide you with many hours of interesting reading and investigating.

Not for learning purposes

This book skims over topics without a good insight over what is being discussed. The reading is quite difficult to grasp without a sufficient background in mathematics, like trigonometry or linear algebra. I found numerous mistakes and errors when doing problems, and the context of the book does not prepare the reader for some of the more complex problems that are given at the end of the chapter. The questions on the back do not start off with simple problems, and are usually found within the range of medium to very hard. I recommend buying another book, and coming back to this one just to do the problems.

This looming conflict is sidelined by a natural disaster that sweeps through this tiny Missouri town and brings out the best in its residents. Set in 1983, the first-person novel is written from Benny’s point of view. While the story is eventful, particularly during the climactic scenes dramatizing the storm and its aftermath, the plot seems less important than the portrayal of the idiosyncratic characters inhabiting Benny’s world. Up there with the best of the best

Klise is a great talent, comparable to Sharon Creech, Gary Schmidt, and Rebecca Stead when it comes to middle-grade fiction. Here she takes on hoarding -- a boy's father is a hoarder, and life is unraveling -- and she does it in unexpected ways. What a gem. The 12-year-old at home (boy) really liked this novel -- Klise is also funnier than the above authors, and manages to hold kids' interest while delving into sometimes dark and always deep subjects.

I adore Kate Klise and try to read everything she writes. While this isn't my favorite Klise book, I think it is worth a read. Fans of Klise will probably enjoy it, as will anyone looking for a good book about the consequences of hoarding and divorce. It is a good character study, that I wish was a bit longer and more developed. Probably best for grades 4 and up.

My Opinion
Another Sunshine State Young Reader's Award nominee. I read this book in one day. It was interesting and easy to read. I will admit to watching the tv shows about hoarding from time to time. So, I do have an interest in this kind of situation. Mostly, I'm trying to figure out how to keep my house from becoming over-cluttered. I figured, the more I see how bad it can get, the more inspired I will be to clean up.
Anyway, about the book, Benny is a strong boy and he tries hard to help his father. But his father thinks everyone is trying to steal his "treasures". Benny feels helpless and lost.
The book is set in 1983, and Benny's father has some ideas about the future that are a little ahead of his time.
I've told you, Nola. It's coming. A giant computer network that'll link everyone in the whole wide world. Once we're all connected by computers, I'll be able to sell my collection, piece by piece, right here from the living room. I'll make money twenty-four hours a day.
Benny has people in the small town that support him and that keeps this from being too sad. Because in reality he is on his own.

Another good book for 4th thru 8th graders (and adults too). This one is for kids who prefer their fiction a little more realistic but still charming.

Except the advice tendered by these crackpot authors is dubious at best, and will likely land the reader who follows it in jail. It's unbelievable how little it takes to become an "authority" on anything these days.

A Wonderful Guide

Craig Sensei has done a wonderful job with this treatise that remains the foremost primer on Iado. I would recommend this book for anyone interested in Iado, Kenjutsu or Japanese culture in general. It has been quite a long time since I first read this book and having recently picked it up again I felt compelled to post a review and state that it is still at the forefront.

Iai: The Drawing of the Sword is an excellent

work documenting a little known style of

japanese swordsmanship called iai-do, or,

"The Way of the drawing of the sword".

This style of martial art centers on the act

of drawing one's sword as quickly and

efficiently as possible. A person well adept

at it is capable of tossing a fruit into the

air, stepping back, drawing his weapon,

slicing the fruit and resheathing before the

orange halves can hit the ground. It is a

deadly poetry of motion to behold.

Mr.Craig continues to teach this and other

traditional martial arts at his Dojo in

Houston, Texas. He attained the title of

Shi-han or "Master Teacher" in 1973. This

title is rarely given to westerners. I've

visited and talked with Mr. Craig and must

say he is an honorable man and a competent

sensei.

Iai: The Art of Drawing the Sword is good as a refresher, at best. Craig opens his tome with some personal history and stories, which is a fine method of doing things, until he brings his own opinion into it. He gives the impression that spiritualism should account for most everything in iaido; as most practitioners are aware, spiritualism is only one aspect, and technique is equally or more important.
Throughout the book, Craig provides small interludes detailing Japanese history, and other information, some of which is accurate, some of which is very much exaggerated, and some of which is not true. While the thought was nice, he should have researched his facts more.
The drawings accompanying his descriptions of the kata are sketchy and vague; a beginner would have difficulty following them, although someone with grounding in another Japanese sword art such as kenjitsu may have better luck. However, with knowledge of the kata, or at least of the mechanics of the motions, a reader would find this book a helpful reminder, as long as he does not try to base his study entirely on this book.
Overall, this is not a terrible book, but there are much better on the subject, with regards to technique, illustration, and history.

A very comprehensive introduction to music.

I have used this text and earlier editions teaching music appreciation at community college and have found it to be the best yet so far. The most useful part of the text for the [before class] non-active listener are the listening outlines, with very detailed descriptions of what to listen for in various pieces of music. Kamien includes very early musical selections up to the very recent. Also included are some non-western music examples. This text could be very beneficial to musician and non-musician alike. There is great detail in his explanations of how various musical forms are put together. There is just enough history included in the text to avoid the boredom of the purely historical perspective of music appreciation.

Brief, but thorough

I've seen the unabridged version of this book and it's as big as an encyclopedia. The Brief Edition does well to summarize the important points in music history; though the meat of the book is centered in the classical (Renaissance, Baroque, Romantic, Classical, Opera) and merely touches on the more modern componets like jazz and rock. Still, the book and accompanying CD are excellent for those wanting to get a light but informative immersion in the classic music world and learn a little bit about its most famous composers.

I ordered this book/ cd set because it was required text for a college class. It is well organized and clearly written. I especially like the way the listening guides in the book refer to specific portions of songs which are recorded so that the entire work can be played seemlessly in its entirity, or specific portions can be accessed individually.
The only thing this work lacks is impossible for any work that attempts to offer a complete appreciation of music to achieve, complete scope.
I recommend this set.
